My girlfriend and I were looking for places to go when we found flights and hotel for an unbelievable price. A friend told me about Dubrovnik a couple of years ago - a walled medieval city on the Adriatic - and I‘d wanted to go there ever since. I was taken by images of this idyllic old city, sticking out from the main land, houses with their red clay tiles creating a striking contrast to the cerulean blue water of the surrounding sea.

Staying in Cavtat is probably one of the best moves we made. A small town across the bay from Dubrovnik, it is close enough to be convenient but just enough off the beaten track to be still be comfortable. Whilst we were there it was obvious that in the heat of the summer it would, like the rest of the region, become over run by swarms of tourists. Our hotel seemed empty most of the time, but perhaps it was the Saga Hotel crowd that rose early and stuck to the set menu at the hotel, disappearing on the many tour buses that they offered.
